If there’s one thing I have learned from working with incarcerated people, it’s a new view of time. When that’s all you have, things change. Time heals, you just have to give time, time.
These 5 incarcerated women are graduating on Saturday from our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training. KUTV Story Here
One of the discussions we have as we near the end of every training, is the concept of “choose”. It’s a tough concept, especially for someone who feels that they didn’t choose their circumstances, or are not in a position to have the freedom to choose that many others do.
But when we get to the bottom of it, we are ALL in a position to choose our lives, exactly as they are, and as they are not. We can choose this, now, just as it is. To do so creates inner peace. To do otherwise, creates suffering. The suffering of not having something we want…like ice cream, or a new car, or a better relationship. The suffering of having something we don’t want…like extra pounds, or cancer, or a life sentence.
Stepping back, and taking it all in, these women each declared “I choose this”. And it was empowering for all of them. They each declared that while they are incarcerated, they will serve. They will learn. They will grow. They won’t lose hope and prayer for a future where they may see their children again. A future where they can sleep on comfortable beds, and wake to fresh coffee and open windows. But while they don’t have those things, they are choosing their NOW. And in this, they are free.
How about you? What do you choose today?
